Over the past 18 years, knitters across Canada have donated
more than 281,000 hand knit items to children in need. The
project, which started on a small scale in Ottawa, quickly
gained momentum.
To participate, knitters purchase yarn from their local
Lewiscraft store and knit a hat, scarf or pair of mittens.
When the item is complete, the knitter simply brings the
knitted item to the store, along with their receipt for a
full refund of the price of the yarn. The Salvation Army
distributes the hand knit items to kids in need during
Christmas and the wet winter months.
The Lewiscraft in the Victoria Bay Centre recently presented
The Salvation Army with nearly 700 knitted items. The Lewiscraft
in the Tillicum Centre has 500 for The Salvation Army, bringing
a total of over 1200 items donated in the Victoria area.
"This is fantastic", said Captain Lorraine Burry. "The help and
support of Lewiscraft and its customers is going to help keep
many children warm and dry this winter".
