Computer Literacy Training
One of the major barriers people face in gaining employment in the Greater Victoria area is a lack of computer knowledge and skills. As a result, The Salvation Army created a Computer Literacy Training program in December 2003 which has proven to be a successful program for many of our clients.
This program is designed around the educational and practical needs. It is very successful because we provide hands on experience with software in ways that one may see it used in the workplace. We encourage students to use software and integrate technology into their daily lives.. These courses give people the skills they need to find employment.
Our training program is made possible because of the support of our sponsors, SICAN, and Industry Canada. The following courses are available:
Basic Computer Skills
(4 weeks, 100 hours)
When you first acquired your shiny new PC or laptop you couldn’t believe how quick it was compared to your old one. The desktop appeared as if by magic and files opened at lightning speed. Then, over time, you realised that it was starting to take rather longer than it used to before that Excel spreadsheet appeared. In fact, you could make a cup of tea, drink it and wash up the cup whilst the darn thing was booting up… So why has this happened?
Employers need people who have computer skills. Learn basic word processing; e-mail; Internet; Windows; File management.
The computer is a versatile and powerful tool for you and your organization. It enables you to work more effectively and to communicate with people round the world.
Some of the things computers can enable you to do include:
- creating documents
- accounting and calculating
- sending and receiving e-mail messages
- finding information
- publishing information
In the Computer Basics section we provide information on how to set up and maintain your computer, how to use common office productivity tools. Don't be afraid to get to know your computer inside and out! Once you get started you'll wonder how you ever got along without it.
